My Top Five Most Overrated Films | Pugs and Dinosaurs

As controversial as my Skyrim post, today I’m here to tell you what I think are the most overrated films of all time.

These are films people rave about, that get them fired up when you say you’ve only seen them once and didn’t like them and you get to hear that phrase ‘BUT IT’S A CLASSIC!’ Now, I’m not going to deny it – I’ve been guilty of uttering this phrase before, when someone tells me they haven’t seen Lord of the Rings or the Harry Potter movies to be exact (because those films are awesome).

I know that your love of films stems from personal experiences but the list below are all ‘classics’ that get people personally offended when you admit you don’t like them. So, without further ado here are a few movies I really don’t recommend:

Back to the Future

Back in October 2015, if I had to read one more tweet or see one more article about Back to the Future I was going to rip my computer from its socket and launch it across the room. It just wouldn’t go away and I just don’t get it. The films are so bad, so poorly scripted and cheesy that I’m surprised they have such a huge following.

Mad Max Fury Road

I was prepared to really enjoy this one, expecting a crazy action adventure movie and while I did get to experience that I couldn’t help but feel while I left the cinema that there was something missing – I even wrote a post about it. It was basic, in plot, and to be honest I felt like there was no point making it if they weren’t going to push the boundaries further than any of the previous Mad Max films. I know when it first came out people told me I was wrong, that it was awesome and that’s fine, we’re all entitled to our opinions I guess.

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

Ugh

Ugh. That is the one word I used to describe Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. What was it with the 80s and their hateable characters? Why are all the adults so gullible and stupid? I have to admit, I have never got much further than 30 minutes into this film. Maybe I should take my own advice and give it another go.

Donnie Darko

giphy (25)

Pointlessly confusing, depressing and angsty this film is so overrated I don’t even know where to begin. I mean, there are whole websites dedicated to this film and the concept of time travel and alternate universes and yeah that’s interesting but I mean…does anyone really get it? Come on, really? Don’t lie.

The Lion King

giphy (26)

Woah, you might say. The Lion King? Are you being serious? And yes, yes I am. I will admit there are a few songs in the film I absolutely love but much like Bambi I just find it an overwhelmingly depressing watch at times. It actually makes me anxious. If someone could just trim it down to the fun songs and any moment with Timon and Pumbaa I’d be happy.

But I remember as a child feeling worked up watching Mufasa die, the scene with the Nazi marching hyenas and when Simba and Nala go to the elephant graveyard bothering me. Another Disney film that has the same effect is the Rescuers Down Under, I hate that scene with the tiny mouse doctor and the injured albatross.

So there you go. Five of the most overrated films of all time. In my opinion. Any you agree with?
